Hormones are fascinating! The small amounts go a long way, but if we have too much or too little, our moods, sex drive, energy levels may suffer. Almost every female patient of mine has some kind of hormone imbalance, the treatment could be as simple as adding missing nutrients and minerals to the diet and changing the person’s diet from SAD (Standard American Diet) to whole-food diet rich in phytonutrients. Every time I hear my clients say that it is “normal” for them to have cramps or heavy periods, I want to interrupt by saying: “No, it is not normal, it should not be that way and let’s get to the bottom of why it is happening to you.”
Unfortunately, blood levels of estrogen do not show how estrogen is metabolized and if there is impairment in Phase 1 or Phase 2 (or both phases) of liver detoxification. Knowing which phase to address, helps to fine-tune the supplements and treatment better, as well as monitor the progress in treatment. Some people choose to just take supplements indefinitely, aiming to rev up both Phases of liver detoxification, but taking unnecessary supplements may eventually cost more than checking your levels of hormones once or twice a year.
